Description: Position Overview: The Senior Instructor plans, organizes, and directs all Modified Community Correctional Facility (MCCF) academic, vocational, and pre-release education programs for inmates. Organizes, supervises, and teaches academic and trades-related course material to MCCF inmates using traditional classroom methods and through computer-based programs. Plans and directs the facility library programs. Evaluates and approves all instructional programs in academic, practical, and technical subjects. Provides technical and professional assistance to the Facility Manager. Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Plans, develops, organizes, and directs all activities of the MCCF academic, vocational, and pre-release educational programs. Prepares overall curriculum, supervises the instructors, and teaches as a participant in delivery of course within that curriculum. Coordinates the educational program with other facility activities. Prepares the education budget requests for new and continuing programs. Orders and assembles program supplies and equipment, prepares check requests, and reviews all other purchases of supplies and equipment. Assigns, directs, evaluates, and recommends rewards, and disciplines employees in accordance with City policy. Assures that division employees are instructed in job safe practices associated with their work environments. Develops and executes plans for the facility library. Prepares and delivers classroom instruction to and provides instructional supervision of inmate students. Prepares study courses and lesson plans. Develops and prepares lesson plans, and plans effective presentations. Supervises the development and maintenance of the MCCF computer lab, and the instructional programs associated with that facility. Supervises and participates in the classroom preparation of inmate students for GED testing. Supervises and administers evaluative testing of new inmates to determine general educational levels, and educational needs. Administers the inmate reading test. Prepares a variety of reports related to department activities, assigned inmates, and employees. Reviews and maintains a wide variety of written records and reports, accident reports, and requisitions. Supervises and evaluates assigned inmate aides. Conducts special subject matter courses as requested by the Chief of Corrections and City Manager. Performs a variety of other duties as assigned. Education and Experience: Bachelor’s Degree with a major emphasis in education, educational administration, computer science, computer applications or a related field required. Master’s Degree in one of the related fields, preferred. Successfully complete the California Basic Educational Standards Test (CBEST). Maintain a valid Teaching Certificate from the State of California. Five to seven years of professional experience in teaching or educational administration at the high school level or above. Master’s Degree may be substituted for professional experience on a year for year basis to a maximum of two years. One to two years of practice teaching and at least one year of curriculum development. One year of experience in operating an array of Windows-based applications programs on personal computers, and operation of related peripheral equipment. Maintain a valid California Driver License with a driving record acceptable to the City.
