State officials fear future prison breaks as technology improves

After a convicted felon used a cell phone and maybe even a drone to help in his escape from a Ridgeville prison this month, South Carolina officials are concerned the trend may be growing, putting the lives of correctional facility workers and community members in danger.

In 2016 there were nine instances of inmates escaping South Carolina prisons, including one level 3 maximum-security facility; the other incidents occurred at level 1 minimum-security facilities, according to SCDC spokeswoman Sommer Sharpe.

On July 4, Jimmy Causey, a 46-year-old inmate serving a life sentence for kidnapping his attorney and his attorney’s family in 2002, used wire cutters to escape through a hole in a fence at Lieber Correctional Institution in Dorchester County.
