A 34-year-old prison inmate died at the Johnson County Hospital after being found unresponsive in his cell, according to a prison spokeswoman.

In a news release, Dawn-Renee Smith said staff at the Tecumseh State Correctional Institution found Reuben Reyes unresponsive in his cell from an apparent suicide attempt at about 2:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Staff immediately began CPR, and rescue workers took Reyes to the local hospital. Smith said Reyes was pronounced dead there at 3:20 p.m.

The Nebraska State Patrol is investigating his death. As is the case whenever an inmate dies in custody, a grand jury will be convened to review his death, as required by state law.
