Iowa man serving life sentence dies in prison hospice

CORALVILLE, Iowa (KWQC) - A man serving a life sentence for kidnapping and sexual assault in Scott County has died in prison.

The Iowa Department of Corrections says 69-year Henry Lee Whitfield died Friday, Nov. 9, 2018, in a hospice room at the Iowa Medical and Classification Center in Coralville. He was hospitalized due to chronic illness. Whitfield started serving the sentence in 1980.

According to online documents from the Iowa Supreme Court posted on Justia Law website, in 1982, Whitfield appealed his conviction claiming it was based on hearsay.
