You are more than welcome. Don’t hesitate to ask questions. We in Corrections are one very large family and as such are happy to help each other out.

The Thing about this Job is it is more suited to the more mature type of Person. It’s not a Job that I would recommend to someone straight out of school/college. The more life experience you have the better. And Don’t worry to much about the Academy. They will do everything to help you graduate. Remember if you show that this is what you want to do they will help you with any area you are having trouble with. It’s as much in their interest that you graduate as it is in yours.

Well, I think it really depends on what state or company (private) you are going to be working for. I work for the State of Oklahoma, and they do require you to live on campus at academy. For some people, academy was a little tough, but as long as you have common sense, it shouldn’t be a problem. I also asked my friends who work at the private prison here, and they said that they were able to live off campus and that academy was a breeze. I would suggest going for the state job. Most of the time the academys are more structured and will prepare you better for the job. Not to mention the pay and benefits (great if you have children) are better. Good luck in your decision.

I am interested in becoming a corrections officer and would like information on the academy..I am scared to fail at the academy because I am already 27 and don’t want to put in all the effort and fail. So can anyone tell me just how hard the academy is? Is it like the military? Can u live off campus if u have a family? thanks…
