Colorado prisons chief outlines inmate work program for Logan County hemp farm

Colorado's Director of Corrections met with the Logan County Board of Commissioners Tuesday to outline a plan to use about-to-be-released inmates to work on a local hemp farm. The plan is part of a Department of Corrections program to give short-time inmates work experience and help them generate some income prior to release.

Dean Williams, executive director of the DOC, told the commissioners during their work session meeting that he had met with Sheriff Brett Powell and Sterling Police Chief Tyson Kerr on Monday to brief them on the program.

Williams said the program is an attempt to lower the recidivism rate among Colorado felons being released into communities. He said about half of released inmates re-offend and end up back in the system because they have no job to go to, no work experience and no money to re-start their lives once they're out of prison.
